Jason Pomeranc and partners' follow-up to their SoHo hotel 60 Thompson brought a blast of downtown cool to high-rise midtown when it opened - two years late - in November. Half a block from Columbus Circle, moments from Central Park and bang opposite the Time Warner Center (an upmarket mall with the Mandarin Oriental New York at its glass-shard summit), 6 Columbus occupies a 1920s brick-and-stucco building that used to be the three-star West Park Hotel. What the 88-room hotel lacks in views it makes up for in looks: Steven Sclaroff's 'Mod meets midtown' design features Eero Saarinen furniture, teak walls, cowhide rugs and pinstriped upholstery, plus 1960s fashion photography by Guy Bourdin. Bathrooms have midnight-blue tiles, illuminated mirrors and Fresh toiletries. The glam look extends to the lifts, which are lined with pony skin, while the lobby has marble walls and a super-sized chesterfield sofa. It's linked to the pine-panelled Blue Ribbon restaurant, the city's fifth, which serves decent sushi and better grilled fish to a noisy mix of Manhattanites and hotel guests, who get priority seating. A rooftop bar for guests and members only, modelled on 60 Thompson's 'sceney' spot A60, opens this summer. Breakfast, not included in the room rate, is served in the Blue Ribbon; if you don't fancy paying $6 for a coffee (and a lot more for granola), Starbucks is next door and there's a branch of Dean & DeLuca across the road.
WHEN TO GO
