Guests arriving after dark at this architecturally dramatic beachfront resort two hours' drive south of Bangkok can expect a warm welcome courtesy of a giant fireball, which is set off on your arrival. This is just one of many unique design details introduced by the hotel's Thai architect, Duangrit Bunnag. Rise at dawn for a walk on the long stretch of soft white sand in front of the hotel, then ride the Gulf of Thailand's gentle waves or choose an activity from the Alila Experience Menu, such as golf, mountain-biking or a tour of the local market. Return for a do-it-yourself salad at the upper level Clouds Loft, with its expansive sea views, or lie poolside on chaises longues discreetly hidden by flowering hedges. Late in the day, there's a rotating schedule of yoga, meditation and t'ai chi. The 72 bedrooms and seven villas manage photogenic industrial-chic minimalism without sacrificing warmth, thanks to plush cushions and shag- pile rugs. You can simulate rainy days under your 3.5-metre rain shower or head to the Alila Spa for an energising Thai massage using a scrub made from indigenous coffee-coconut mud.
